The label has made a reputation for unearthing previously unheard or unreleased archive material from great jazz artists including recent live sets from guitarist Wes Montgomery and intense live Paris sessions from organist Larry Young. Now they are to release a set of Jones / Lewis recordings capturing their famous Orchestra on their opening night gig at New York’s Village Vanguard jazz club. Theses sessions were recorded February 7th, 1966 and this is the first official release.

This night is of particular importance in the history of the music as it sparked a long residency at the club for at the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra, continuing for 12 years. The legacy of this has created lasting Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.

Over 100 minutes of music and a 92-page book are included with many previously unpublished memoirs and photos. There are contributions from many of the original members of the Orchestra including trumpeter Jimmy Owens, bassist Richard Davis and saxophonists Eddie Daniels and Jerry Dodgion. The collection will be released February 19th 2016.
