The 20th MOBO Awards got underway last night with the first ever pre-MOBO event at London’s Under The Bridge in the grounds of Chelsea Football Club.

The main event takes place in Leeds on November 4th but this year a special event was held to honour the Jazz, Gospel and R&B categories. Performances on the night included veteran British saxophonist Courtney Pine and vocalist Julia Beal, both Best Jazz nominees, as well as soul singer Mica Paris with a great take on Sly & The Family Stone’s ‘If You Want Me To Stay’ and the night closed out with soul man Omar.

The MOBO Best Jazz Act 2015 award went to the duo Binker & Moses, comprising saxophonist Binker Golding and drummer Moses Boyd, who took the award in recognition of their brilliant fiery improvisational album ‘Dem Ones’, released only on double vinyl by London label Gearbox Records, and many great live performances together as part of various bands.

The MOBO Awards 2015 so far:

  • Best Jazz Act - Binker And Moses
  • Best R&b / Soul Act - Shakka
  • Best Gospel Act - Faith Child
