Ainita Wardell "Anita Sings Anita"
Thursday, January 16th
Anita Wardell celebrates Anita O’Day, the ‘Jezebel of Jazz’: Anita O’Day was the singer’s singer whom musicians loved, known for her highly rhythmic, playful, unique style of phrasing, whether tackling fast or slow tempos, she was always so precise and extremely musical. O’Day loved the bebop genre and was one of the first of the big band singers to immerse herself in the understanding of the art form and influenced many artists of the time including June Christy and Chris Connor. The rhythmic, improvisational flexibility of bebop was the perfect platform for Anita’s singing style and she performed all over the world in festivals and concerts with such luminaries as Louis Armstrong, Dinah Washington and Thelonious Monk. The documentary of the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival, “Jazz On A Summer’s Day” made her a global star. The world was amazed by her unique phrasing on “Sweet Georgia Brown” and “Tea For Two” from that concert. “Anita Sings Anita” celebrates this incredible artist who is clearly one of Wardell’s major influences and for this special show, Anita will be performing with the swinging trio talents of Rob Barron, piano, Jeremy Brown, bass and Emiliano Carroselli, drums. 8.00pm Tickets £11 in advance & £13 on the door
