Event Summary

Tenor saxophonist Dave O’Higgins is a hugely popular and well-known figure on the international jazz scene. Twice winner of Best Tenor Sax in the British Jazz Awards, his powerful, driving style has been a feature of the scene for over 25 years, performing with everyone from Cleo Laine to Frank Sinatra.

For his appearance at Fleet, Dave O’Higgins is joined by wife and fellow tenor player Judith O’Higgins, apparently in the manner of the movie, Mr & Mrs Smith…

In reality this is in the good humoured tradition of the great Johnny Griffin – Eddie Lockjaw Davis group, with some of the best arrangements borrowed from that repertoire. Although the two tenors were of different temperaments both musically and emotionally their ideas complemented and enhanced one another. In the words of Eddie Lockjaw Davis: “What we are doing is presenting, side by side, two different styles of playing tenor—a contrast, not a contest”.

Expect swinging straight ahead tough tenors in the time-honoured tradition!

“Exceptional fluency.. one of Britain’s finest musicians” (The Observer)
