The Father Christmas of jazz (see recent pics), tenor saxist Sonny Rollins is a living hero to serious jazzers but has also entertained generations of casual listeners.

Even if they don’t know his name, they’ll have enjoyed the likes of St Thomas and his sassy title music from Alfie (not to be muddled with the mawkish Bacharach & David ballad of that name).

My personal fave is Sonnymoon For Two, especially the blistering big band version by Tubby Hayes.
