George Shearing

George Shearing was playing at an American jazz club where the billing outside described him as ‘Britain’s best blind pianist’. At the far end of the same street, Eddie Thompson was playing at a club where the billing described him as ‘Britain’s best blind pianist’. Eddie thought it quite funny and I’m sure it didn’t bother the unflappable George.
I once tried to interview Mr Shearing backstage at the Barbican. He was a charming man and I’m sure the recording would have gone like a dream… if only my batteries hadn’t gone flat.
Never mind: great glasses.
