The Peter Young Show

Peter Young is the sound of Jazz FM, Saturdays from 3pm.

A hugely popular broadcaster, Peter spent many years at Jazz FM playing Northern Soul as part of the legendary ‘Soul Cellar’. It was always his ambition to be involved in music and bought his first soul record at the age of 12. It was ‘Fingertips’ by Little Stevie Wonder.

Dear PY i have just dug out my copy of Curtis Mayfields wonderful ‘Superfly’ album and forgot what an incredible piece of film score music it was from 1972. Play the whole album if you can or one track will suffice! Your show continues to be as excellent as ever. Best regards Richard Bailey.Bristol.

I wonder if there will be anything by Mick Talbot/The Style Council in this week’s show? ;-)

All the best…. Rob Prestidge, Nuneaton.

    Hello Paul,
Thanks for your kind words. Such a shame about Teena Marie, an unexpectedly sad end to last year. I hope I was able to do her talent justice in the space of an hour.

All the best and thanks for listening.
    PY.

    hi pete
if you can possibly find the time to say Happy Birthday to Dee who has been a loyal fan for 30 years but mysteriously claims to be 27 (again) today, it would be fantastic. Never stop broadcasting!

  7. Paul says:

PY – Found you! You introduced me to real Soul with the now infamous Soul Cellar sessions back in the early 80′s when growing up in Sussex, whatever happened to all those great jingles!!

  8. Peter Young says:

    Thanks Paul – welcome back!
The Cellar has developed a bit over the years, as the passing of time has allowed me to include records I wouldn’t have played when the show first started 32 years ago. Still got the jingles on those old tape cartridges, and some on mini-disc, but have no equipment to play them on. I’ll see if I can dig something out for a laugh!
    Cheers
    PY.

Hello Peter Young big up to all you dj’s jazz fm vibes has got me singing, there is a special jazzy tune that I and i’m sure the rest of jazz fm listener’s would love to hear it’s from one of the master’s of the universal vibe : Quincy Jones – ‘Back On The Block’. Now that’s what I call a special tunege i’m sure you all agree. Keep it sweet sugar and spice like all thing’s nice. Bless you all from the funky drummer Kevin Morgan.

  12. Nigel Spencer says:

Hi PY. Congratulations on your 32nd anniversary! I cannot promise that I’ve been there for the whole 32, but at least 20 of them, on the various stations over the years. Here’s to the next 32!! All the best from sunny Cornwall!

  13. Peter Young says:

Thank you Nigel. I’ll be there if you will!

    All the best,
    PY.

  14. Peter Maloney says:

    Hi Py

I just listened twice back to back your last show including the Ashford and Simpson tribute. The thought occurs to me that many stations have a “Soul” show, but they just keep on trotting out the same old songs…not necessarily bad songs, just over used.
You have again proved that there is real variety in soul; but I knew that anyway, that’s why I listen!

  15. Peter Young says:

    Hello Peter,
Thanks for the kind words. Yes I see very little point in repeating what is available elsewhere. I’ve strived for years to make the music as unique as possible. There are many radio stations trotting out ‘Young Hearts Run Free’, etc. Will be paying a further tribute to Nick Ashford on the ‘Cellar’ this weekend.

Thanks for your loyalty stretching back many years!
    Cheers
    PY.

  16. Kevin Morgan says:

Hello Peter Young thanks for vibing up the start of your musical session with a mighty Roy Ayres track, your show sounds nicey and spicey its got my heart beating to the bongo drum from Kevin Morgan Milton Keynes.

  17. Peter Young says:

    Hi Kevin,
Glad you enjoyed Roy – always a pleasure, and thanks for your comments. Will play some more soon!

    Cheers
    PY.

  18. PAUL says:

    Dear Peter,
Thank You for another great show I enjoyed the Sly Stone bit a real pity about him such a truly great talent ruin by the evil of drug abuse. Also it was nice hearing Chaka Khan with Miles. Than a hour of the Four Tops pure magic. Peter Your a DJ who not only loves good music you also have a great respect for it

  19. Peter Maloney says:

    Hi PY
A rare treat for me to catch the show live while going round the house with a paintbrush, doing all those little bits that i’ve left “till later”……
    Sounding as good as ever.
A little bit of “Soul Serenade” sometime would be great, or just keep throwing new stuff at me. Whatever. It’s all good. Really enjoyed the Grant Green track just now.

Thank You for playing the Bobby womack Side B track. I have not heard it before but although the meaning of the song isnt applicable in my current circumstances it sure did fit my mood at whats is a difficult time for me. I remember hearing you back in the ol’ days at Capital and its great to listen to D.Js who still have a passion for music and go the extra mile to find excellant music for us to enjoy.
    Regards
    Steve

  21. Peter Young says:

    Hello Steve,
Thanks for your message and kind words. The Bobby Womack tune always seems to get a reaction from all who enjoy soul music. Probably one of his best. I hope things improve for you whatever the circumstances may be. Jazz FM affords me the opportunity to pick my own music, so I’m glad you approve.

    All the best
    PY.

  22. Rick says:

Blimey PY you’re still finding great music, good show, not sure how you do it, just the right groove on a Saturday afternoon. Love to hear again some time Helping Hand from Arthur Miles? Keep it up. Cheers. Rick

  23. Peter Young says:

Thanks Rick, It’s all there if you’re prepared to dig a little deeper. Will play Arthur Miles soon. All the best, PY.

  24. Peter Maloney says:

    Hi PY

Seasons felicitations to you and all real music lovers who are listening now or sometime over the next week.
I’ve just been out in the car and had to trawl thru the FM dial…ended up listening to a Xmas soul show on R2…came in thru the door to find to my surprise your dulcet tones issuing forth from our valve, sorry, DAB radio. May the tones continue issuing forth.
May the forth be with you!!!

  26. Graham Oliver says:

    Hello Peter
Remembering those old days on Cuddly Capital when you did the handover from Mike Allen and you would play Solomon Burke ‘Music To Make Love By’ and take the merciful pee out of it with sound effects and tasteful comments.

Where the hell can I find that track?

I have tried over the years through legal download sites, do you have any idea where i† is available, thanks, happy Xmas/ hanukkah whatever.

Keep the faith, you are a legend .. then there is Tony Blackburn!

  27. Peter Young says:

    Hello Graham,
Thanks for the message. I’ve got a feeling this could be tricky. Solomon’s Chess album was reissued some time back, but could well be deleted again by now. It was Mike himself who played the track at the end of his show, I used to join in sometimes. Maybe Soul Brother Records can help.

    Cheers
    PY.

  28. adil says:

    Sir,
you too must desist from these funky grooves. I am finding my fingers refusing to wander over my keyboard in their customary haphazard fashion and insist on tapping out funky beats dictated by your massive and infectious playlist.
    Long may you continue.

  29. chris says:

hi peter i tried in vain to catch the name of the song you played today 21st at approx 5.45 to 5.50 possibly” you are my everything “may have been a remix “bullit proof” if your able to put me out of my missery and tell me the artist and if the song is on an album ? i would be most greatful keep up the good work regards chris

  30. Peter Young says:

    Hi Chris,
Thanks for the message. It was ‘My Everything’ by Lalah Hathaway. You can find the original version on her current album ‘Where It All Begins’. The version I played is a remix, not yet available.

All the best and thanks for listening,
    PY.
