A funky night was had by one and all at Ronnie’s on Saturday.
The fun had started earlier in the day when a picture of PY gigging circa 1980 complete with oak surround turntables and a Mr Byrite suit was posted on our Funky Sensation Facebook page. The challenge was that I couldn’t match the image, but they were wrong! Can I just mention, big hair, big sunglasses and a first generation LED watch! Click here if you dare.
Down at the club PY was entertaining the troops with a full on stand-up routine between choice tunes. The ‘Soul Cellar Fellahs’ were in attendance too. One man told me that he would ‘die happy’ having secured an autograph. I can’t tell you his name as he was having a little trouble enunciating.
When it was my turn, I was determined to put on a good show and keep ‘em dancin to the end. There were ‘Soul Cellar’ pleasers from Jackie Wilson, Stevie Wonder and The Staple Singers, but it’s Ronnie’s after all so Jazz has to be the main ingredient in the mix. I served up some classic Jazz Funk in the form of Joe Sample and Ronnie Jordan, then moved into a more Nu Jazz feel with Soulstace and the JuJu Orchestra.
By the time we were done, the clocks had slipped forward to 4AM. PY & I made for the Limo and made it back to our neighbouring West London mansions at 5AM. Another funky night in the can…. two bad taste shirts in the laundry basket ready for their next outing soon.
