Sarah Ward presents Jazz FM's flagship programme Dinner Jazz.
Previously with the station for over six years, Sarah’s successful radio career includes presenting breakfast on BBC Radio 5 Live and evenings on Capital FM, as well as daily music programmes for Classic FM and BBC Radio 4.
A true jazz aficionado, Sarah’s knowledge and passion for music as well as her stories of days gone by make Dinner Jazz the perfect evening listen.

Hi Sarah;
Several years ago, I think you played (on one evening Dinner Jazz show) an awesome jazz piano improvisation of “In the Bleak Midwinter”. Do you happen to recall who the pianist was?……& whether that actual track is available on an album somewhere?
Thanks, in anticipation
Greg.
Jazz FM is life. Full stop.
Hi, Sarah, lovely to hear ‘Quiet Nights’ ~ sadly not so quiet in Brazil at this moment. My DJ friend, Joao de Penha, runs a jazz & bossa~nova station, Radio Teresopolis, a suburb of Rio, which has just suffered horrendous and devastating flooding, as you may well know. I have just received this from him:
“Beloved friend Liz, I appreciate so much you thinking of me. Yes, I’m ok and my relatives are safe (part of my family lives in Petrópolis, one of the flood areas). But I am terribly sad with the tragic facts, of course. However, the hope survives. João da Penha.
Sarah, I’m sure he would be touched to know that jazz fm & listeners will be thinking of Brazil at this time. Warm regards, Liz Ashton
I was so relieved to read that Joao da Penha is OK. He and I have been in contact for several years, as I am an American jazz singer and he is a faithful fan. I have been trying to reach him since I heard of the mudslide, with no success. This post sets my mind at ease. Thank you! Teresa Manzella
Hi Sarah,
I’ve been away from this station for 15 years, and only came back a week ago. The music you played tonight was simply beautiful, and so good to hear you again.
with best wishes, and thanks
Tom Bennison
Hey Sarah,
Listening to your last show again on the 15th Feb (on demand) – Wonderful show!.. Here’s my question(s), (a) Will you be releasing the shows as podcasts at any point in the future? and (b) Is there be a library of previous shows we can refer to reminisce.
Yours avidly, Micheal
at last i’ve found you again…life resumes
dear sarah ward please keep on playing the great jazzmusic you always play on jazzfm the jazzmusic is really good and great yours faithfully marnix van/schelven nottinghill west london
Hi Sarah,
Love the programme. This evening 22nd May you played a big band number (I think Chet Baker) it was obviously a take from Polka Dots and Moonbeams. it was great but i missed the details. Could you please give me the details, Cheers.
Roy.
Loving the show tonight, as usual. Not a tune out of place. Loving it.
Hi Sarah,
Love the show. I used to listen to the original “dinner jazz” with you and Helen back in the 90s too and it’s always one of Jazzfm’s highlights for me. For relaxing and wonderfully soothing jazz and true R&B it just doesn’t get any better…….anywhere else.
Keep up the wonderful music (Helen too).
Paul
Hi Sarah
Great show! You played a lovely track last night (26 June) with a female singer Gretchen was her first name but I didn’t catch her surname. I think the song was called ‘Circling’
Would be glad if you can give me her full name to find more information.
Thanks
James
Hi Sarah,
I think it was on Sunday evening the 10th of July when you played a beautiful trackof Shirley Horn singing, ‘The Solitary Moon’, could you please tell me which album this is from, I would be most grateful,
Yours in anticipation,
Colin.
Hi Colin, it’s from an album called ‘You’re My Thrill’ which is widely available.
All the best, Matt
Hello again Sarah,
On Dinner Jazz on Monday or Tuesday evenings, the 1st or 2nd of August, you played a fabulous Latin American track by someone I think you said was something which sounded like ‘Tito Puente by Ray Baressa, I’m afraid I didn’t hear it clearly. The flute playing was absolutely fantastic, is it at all possible for you to give me details of the album by this superb band,
Yours most optimistically,
Sincere best wishes to all at Jazz FM,
Colin.
hey, anyone know the title/artist of the last tune played last night? (Aug 14) couldn’t make the readback out
tfa, Joe
Hi -
Love the show
can anybody help? On Monday’s show (15th), Sarah played a lovely piece of music (within the first fifteen minutes)…very mellow, female vocalist. I missed the name of the singer but she said that she ‘famously provided inspiration for Miles Davis’ muted trumpet playing’?
Think one of the lyrics was ‘wherever I lay my heart, that’s my home’
can anybody help?
Thank you so much in anticipation of your help

Hi Sarah Ward I’m always enjoying the flavours of heaven on earth simply because heaven on earth is jazz fm for sure. Your mellow vibes has got me hipnotised jazz fm is the best pure niceness, from Kevin Morgan Milton Keynes.
Hi Sarah and Helen;
I don’t like disco music that much so I don’t listen to Jazzfm all the time. But when your programes come on it’s like a ride into the stars.
Thanks.
Hello Sarah I loved your Jazzy Dinner show today as I always do, I cant wait for your playlist it has some tracks I just cant live without pure niceeeey . Kevin Morgan MiIton Keynes.
Hello Sarah,
Dear Sarah, I remember you broadcasting on Kenya Broadcasting Service all those years ago, good to see you still broadcasting.ove to chat to you a out the old days. Best wishes, Bill
Hello Sarah,
Thank you for the wondrous selection on every installment of Dinner Jazz. I have refined my routine to embrace a relaxing bubble bath to unwind from the daily stresses whilst having your show in the background, and all other communication modules disabled.
Keep doing what you do so very well, and thanks for the many hours of pleasure.
i would love to know what was the last track before this was… thank you for your lovely music choices for so many years…. xxxx
Hey, Sarah! Lovely to read all the accolades, but no surprise …… for several years 7.00 pm has meant Dinner Jazz in our house, delicious, lilting, beguiling, relaxing tunes, and long may it continue! Pretty please, when can you play something from the current Michael Franks album? I’m sure your bossa-nova listeners will melt to hear his “Samba Blue”. He seems sadly neglected on the airwaves – jazz or otherwise – no one should pass this earth without hearing him …. Liz xxx
I have a yearning to hear your show as a cure for my insomnia. It’s the only thing that convinces my body to unwind and relax, otherwise, there’s a continual undercurrent of loathesome worries that simply won’t go away. Thanks Sarah.
Hi Sarah…can you tell me who the female Japanese musician was you spoke to yesterday (27/12/11) on your show. I would like to track down some of her music….many thanks. Enjoy your Dinner Jazz show very much…all the best for 2012…Cheers…Robbie
