Nick grew up on his step-dad’s Jazz collection, but as puberty hit, Nick fell out with jazz and in with pop. But in recent years he has found jazz again and can currently be heard on Jazz FM between 4am and 6am, every weekday. His favourite jazz artist is Buddy Rich and has spent many hours looking at some great Buddy footage on YouTube. Just amazing!
Nick’s other love (apart from his two children) is radio – he’s won awards for his backroom work and has been on the air in another life with Rosie Kendrick – and the two are still firm friends!
Interview With Nick Pitts
1. What’s your favourite Jazz FM programme and why?
Leo Green and Friends. It’s an unmissable feast of music and Leo is a genius.
2. What’s the first record you bought and where did you buy it?
I didn’t buy it, but it was a cassette from a petrol station (remember those) and it included Kenny Ball and his Jazz Men with 'Midnight in Moscow'.
3. What’s the most embarrassing song on your iPod/in your collection?
Starlight Vocal Band – ‘Afternoon Delight’ (sorry!)
4. In your opinion, what’s the greatest album of all time and why?
Buddy Rich – ‘The Man’, because it has my favourite tune of his ever – ‘Manhattan’.
5. What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
I have to say I’m not a massive live music fan. So much goes into getting the sound right on a record, you always get disappointed when you see them live. But I went and saw some faceless band at Ronnie’s once and it was phenomenal.
6. What’s your favourite live music venue and why?
Ronnie’s – the room is great and not too big.
7. Jazz Is...
... something you won’t see on ‘X-Factor’/something you can get lost in.
8. In your opinion, who’s the most inspirational radio presenter of all time and why?
Alan Freeman. His passion for music was amazing and it showed that you didn’t need to be snobbish about it. He loved opera as much as he did heavy metal. He was also a great presenter and as someone I met a couple of times - such a lovely guy.
9. What’s been your most embarrassing moment in radio?
Working at a radio station that had ‘Don’t Drink in the Studio’ signs everywhere... and then dropping my morning coffee down the desk...
10. What’s your favourite film and why?
‘Bedknobs and Broomsticks’. Great for adults and kids alike. You’ll catch me, my 11-year-old and 5-year-old all enchanted by it on the sofa at least once a month.
11. Who would you invite to your fantasy dinner party?
Why share the food?

my friend heard a song on your show at some time this morning, and its doing her head in as to what it is, all she can tell me is the lyrics are something like either,” hold on”, or, “slow down your going to fast” and she thinks that whoever they are they performed it at ronnies bar. if you have any clues at all on what this is i would be eternally grateful to hear from you as its driving her insane , thank you
