In October 2007, he won his second MOBO Award, at the O2 Arena, London where he was announced as the winner in the Best Jazz Act category- fending off stiff competition from the likes of Wynton Marsalis. His skills as a hip hop MC and producer have also garnered him recognition in the urban music world: having supported the likes of KRS ONE, Dwele and TY, and being championed by the likes of Rodney P and BBC 1-Xtra’s Twin B. His last album release, A Life in the Day of B19 is a ground-breaking concept album that effortlessly melds the worlds of Jazz and Hip Hop to tell a story of inner city trials and triumphs in Kinch’s native Birmingham. Concentrating on the stories of three fictitious characters and featuring narration from veteran BBC newscaster Moira Stuart it was released to much critical acclaim. It has earned him 4 stars in the Guardian and Times, his second MOBO Award and the British Jazz Award for best Alto Saxophonist, and an Urban Music Award nomination in 2007. Kinch continues to broaden his musical lexicon and has composed scores for a number of high profile theatre productions, including Absolute Beginners at the Hammersmith Lyric, and Kwame Kwei-Armah’s Statement of Regret at The National Theatre. 2007 also saw the development of Soweto’s first major work as a scriptwriter following more directly in his father Don Kinch’s footsteps. The Midnight Hop is an epic piece of musical-theatre, retelling the stories of black musician’s in 18th Century England, with a completely unique meeting of classical music, folktales, popular doggerels from the period and modern jazz. The Theme from Starsky and Hutch, cemented JTQ’s reputation as master of the jazz-funk-r’n’b workout; 60s spy themes, psychedelic and free-form jazz all added something to the band’s distinctive sound. Originally playing the Hammond B3 organ in the UK mod revival band The Prisoners, James Taylor formed his own quartet in 1985, and began playing music similar to the rare-groove jazz-funk then in vogue around London. By the early 90s, that movement had spawned acid jazz, and JTQ found itself at the forefront of a vibrant young club scene. The first single, Blow-Up, was released in 1985 on the Re Elect The President label, a precursor to Acid Jazz. The band’s debut album, Mission Impossible, was released the following year, predominantly consisting of covers of 60s film themes such as Alfie, Mrs Robinson and Goldfinger. In the early 1990s, the single Love The Life reached the Top 40, and the accompanying album, Supernatural Feeling, settled in the Top 30 UK charts. After releases on Polydor and Big Life Records, JTQ returned to Acid Jazz, and In The Hand of The Inevitable remains the label’s biggest selling album to date. In 1997 James had the chance to fulfil a dream when he was asked to score the theme tune to Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, the spy spoof starring Mike Myers and Elizabeth Hurley. JTQ’s Whole Lotta Live album was nominated for a MOBO award in 1998, and the following year James featured on Tom Jones’ duets album, Reload. James’ musical talent has been admired by numerous other acts: The Wonderstuff, Manic Street Preachers, The Pogues and U2 have all featured James and his distinctive Hammond sound on their albums. TUESDAY 26TH – SUNDAY 31ST JANUARY 2010 – MICA PARIS [£25 (Tue, Wed & Sun) / £30 (Thu, Fri & Sat)]
The UK’s Soul Queen is back to her first passion: music. 2009 sees the British star releasing her first original studio album in ten years. She is also embarking on a nationwide tour meeting fans old and new and reminding her millions of TV fans what first put her in the public eye twenty- two years ago. Mica Paris’s roots are in soul and gospel music. She grew up singing in her grandparents’ church and by her mid teens was making regular appearances with ‘The Spirit of Watts’ gospel choir. She was soon noticed as a distinctive voice and at seventeen got her first break as a backing vocalist with the UK chart band ‘Hollywood Beyond’. The range, power, and sheer soulfulness of her singing made a major impact on the UK scene and in the following year, 1988, she released her debut, platinum-selling album, So Good, from which she had her first top ten hit with ‘You Are My One Temptation’. This led to a collaboration with American soul singer, Will Downing, on a cover version of ‘Where Is The Love’, a song made famous by Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack in the early ’70s. In 2002 Mica extended her talents into broadcasting. She presented two shows for television: a documentary tracing the influence of gospel on American popular music, ‘The Gospel of Gospel’, for Lion Television and Channel 4, which featured interviews with legendary artists Ray Charles, BB King, Al Green, Issac Hayes and Chaka Khan; and Channel 4’s ‘Gospel Singer of the Year’ competition. She also began hosting her own radio show, ‘Soul Solutions’, on BBC Radio 2. With an average of a million listeners, it became the most successful soul and R&B show in the UK. While presenting ‘What Not To Wear’, Mica encountered many woman who’s stories touched her. She began to examine her own life and choices and was compelled to tell her story in a bid to inspire confidence and self- esteem to those woman and others that find life overwhelming at times. Thus her book ‘Beautiful Within’ was born. Published by Simon and Schuster the book was an instant hit.
