Gigs @ 606 Club in March 2010

606 Club banner

The 606 Club has become one of London’s leading jazz venues over the last 30 years, run by musician Steve Rubie since 1976.

The Club currently books 2 bands a night on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and one Band a night from Thursday to Monday. With Sunday lunches (Big Bands and Gospel Choirs) and a special ‘Singers’ night on Sunday evenings the 606 Club is a major employer of British jazz and related music artists in the U.K.

The ‘606’ has a late night supper license, which requires non-members to eat a substantial meal in order to be served alcohol, so booking a table for dinner in advance is essential on Fridays and Saturdays. This basement Jazz Club has a reputation for great jazz and fine food with candle-lit tables and jazz murals adding to the relaxed ambiance.

Inside The 606 club

Inside The 606 club

Founded as a small 30-seater venue at 606 Kings Road, it established a stellar reputation amongst musicians and audiences. Eventually it out grew the original Club and, although it retained the name 606 Club, moved in May 1988 to the present 165 capacity basement site at 90 Lots Road in Chelsea.

The Club originally established a policy of only booking U.K based musicians in order to support the local scene. In recent years this has changed with the Club’s new European Exchange initiative and support from Yamaha U.K. encouraging a rich cross cultural platform for British and Overseas musicians.

To get to the club just follow the directions on this map.

With his strongly melodic and inventive compositions as well as arrangements of classic jazz standards the music captures a vibrant chemistry between the musicians of the trio. MONDAY 15th MARCH – ** 606 CLUB SPECIAL** LILLIAN BOUTTÉ with DENNY ILETT: It is with enormous pleasure that we welcome to the Club the brilliant New Orleans singer Ms. Lillian Boutté. She has quite literally travelled the world performing her brand of New Orleans Jazz and R&B. Named “New Orleans Musical Ambassador” in 1986, she was only the second jazz legend in the city’s history to be accorded this honour – the first being Louis Armstrong. A successful actress and stage performer as well she appeared in and sung on the sound track of Allan Parker’s “Angel Heart” and was for 4 years a featured performer in the classic stage show “One Mo Time”, performing with the show in New Orleans, Sweden and Brazil. In 1992 she took the show “Spirit of Louisiana” to Germany, in 1992 to 1994 she toured “Gospel United” around Europe culminating in 1995 with Lillian and her group performing in Denmark with a 3,000 voice Gospel choir. Lillian has been touring almost non-stop for the last 18 years doing concerts, club dates and festivals all over the world and with the help of 17 albums featuring jazz, pop, blues, soul and gospel has striven to convey New Orleans’s unique atmosphere to an international audience. Although now based in Europe this has become particularly important for Lillian post Hurricane Katrina and she has been widely praised over the last 3 years for her tireless efforts to raise money for victims and to enable reconstruction work in her devastated home town. “A versatile singer from New Orleans now based in Europe, she takes a song like “All of Me” and turns it into a work of jazz art. The ballads “I Cried for You” and “For All We Know” are perfect vehicles for showcasing the soft and subtle way that she engages in a song and “Go Back Where You Stayed Last Night” shows her bluesy side. One can understand upon hearing Lillian Boutte sing why music is her life” All Music Guide;

TUESDAY 16th MARCH – DAN REINSTEIN: American born but British educated, I first met Dan at the old Club when he was a medical undergraduate. Even then he was an impressive player, and after taking time off his medical studies to go to the Berklee School of Music he became even better. He returned to the USA in the early 90’s, where he became one of the world’s leading experts in laser eye surgery (he’s now officially Professor Reinstein). But he never stopped playing, and when he returned to London to live and work (www.londonvisionclinic.com) it was great to hear his fluent, classic hard-bop, muscular sax playing again. “impressive hard-bop saxophonist” Time Out [Click here to book]

Expect to hear a mature mix of standards and original songs, presented with class and style by this wonderful jazz quintet. “..delightful” Evening Standard; “An astonishingly assured singer” LondonJazzBlog http://londonjazz.blogspot.com JOHN LAW. After classical piano training at the Royal Academy of Music and despite winning a number of prizes and a scholarship the lure of Jazz proved too strong for John who, in 1986, formed his first Jazz group, “Atlas”. For the next 10 years he worked steadily on the more experimental end of the scene, including work with the likes of David Murray, Keith Tippett (piano duo), Louis Moholo and Evan Parker. Towards the end of this period John moved back to more classically influenced music producing a series of highly acclaimed CD’s based on Jazz and plainchant, performing this repertoire around Europe. In 1996 John formed the first of his “straight ahead” trios producing 4 CD’s including original work as well as explorations of the music of Thelonious Monk. Over the next 10 years or so he worked with a variety of the finest UK and mainland European musicians including saxophonists Andy Sheppard, Tim Garland, Julian Siegel, Martin Speake and François Corneloup and pianist Jason Rebello, performing at numerous Clubs and Festivals both in the UK and Europe. As well as the trio and quartet format in 2004 John also composed and arranged for the larger classical/Jazz ensemble, setting his Jazz trio music with a classical horn and string section. The significant critical success of this project led to his being commissioned in 2007 to compose and perform a large-scale work to accompany the silent film classic The Last Laugh by F.W. Murnau for the Bath Film Festival. To date John has appeared at over fifty different festivals worldwide and produced over 25 CDs. His current trio features Sam Burgess-bass and Asaf Sirkis-drums and the music is a wonderfully fluent and beautifully melodic mix of John’s great originals with the occasional Jazz standard mixed in. SUNDAY 28th MARCH – SUNDAY LUNCHTIME SPECIAL (1:00pm-4:00pm) with FRAN LANDESMAN featuring SIMON WALLACE (piano) and Special Guest SARAH MOULE (vocals): An iconic figure in the world of Jazz and poetry for almost 60 years, Fran has established a reputation as a fiercely creative, humorous and provocative writer and performer. Born in New York in 1927 by the early fifties Fran was part of the highly successful cabaret club The Crystal Palace in St Louis. The Palace soon became the “hip” cultural centre of what was to become known as the “Beat” generation. It was at this time that Fran started writing lyrics to songs the most famous of which is still played throughout the world to this day, the mesmeric ballad “Spring Can Really Hang you Up The Most”. Fran (and husband Jay) re-located to London in the mid sixties where she continued to write lyrics for well known Jazz musicians as well as for shows. In the 70’s Fran turned her attention to writing poetry as well as lyrics and continues to do so to this day. Since the late 80’s she has collaborated with the wonderful UK pianist Simon Wallace who regularly performs and records her material with the marvellous singer Sarah Moule. Her attitude to life was beautifully summed up on her appearance on the BBC Radio show Desert Island Discs at the age of 70 when, as her luxury item, she requested “…an inexhaustible supply of marijuana!” [Click here to book]
