Stan Tracey, The Guildhall, Bath, 2003
Stan is a true UK jazz legend and one of the greatest ever homegrown piano players. Influenced mainly by his heroes Thelonious Monk and Duke Ellington, he made his recording debut in 1951. He was the Ronnie Scott’s Club house pianist for most of the 1960s and also toured the US with Ronnie. He played with Sonny Rollins on the ‘Alfie’ film soundtrack and later accompanied the likes of Ben Webster and Gil Evans when they toured the UK. Stan is still going strong, performing regularly throughout the UK.

Here’s William Ellis with his memories of this iconic 2003 shot:
‘Stan was in Bath with saxophonist Bobby Wellins playing their classic Under Milk Wood Suite as part of the Bath International Music Festival.
The portrait was taken after the soundcheck using a Hasselblad on a tripod with 120 Makro Planar lens. The window light in the beautiful room was perfect for this photograph which I am very proud to say is now in the collection of The National Portrait Gallery in London.’
