Blue Note is at the centre of post-war jazz history, documenting the growth of the music from bebop to the cutting-edge styles of the present day and epitomising its image as the definitive statement of cool. The label was founded in New York in 1939. Its owners, German-born friends Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff, were jazz fans on a mission to present the music at its very best.
This compilation brings you some of the label’s best-known recordings, some lesser-known gems and the pick of the label’s current crop of artists. There are classic pieces of post-bop such as Joe Henderson‘s ‘Blue Bossa’, John Coltrane‘s ‘Blue Train’, Wayne Shorter‘s ‘Wild Flower’, Horace Silver‘s ‘Song For My Father’ and Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers‘ ‘Moanin’.
There are tip-top vocal performances from Dianne Reeves(‘That’s All’), Nancy Wilson (‘One Note Samba’), Minnie Riperton (‘I’m a Woman’), Carmen McRae (‘Can’t Hide Love’) and Lou Rawls (‘The Girl From Ipanema’). All-time legends Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon, Chet Baker and Thelonious Monk are all present and correct.
There’s also some tremendous dance-floor jazz from Lee Morgan (‘The Sidewinder’) and groundbreaking jazz/funk from artists such as Donald Byrd, Ronnie Laws, Bobbi Humphrey, Alphonse Mouzon and Eddie Henderson. And the album even features some of the more contemporary Blue Note artists such as Robert Glasper, St Germain and John Scofield.
