Empirical release new album

Empirical 2009

Out ‘n’ In is the new album from British jazz quartet Empirical inspired by US saxophonist Eric Dolphy.

Back in 2007 the ensemble broke out with their eponymous debut album, which was a highly acclaimed brew of modern jazz produced by saxophonist Courtney Pine and released on his Destin-E label.

In addition to critical plaudits it also won a lcutch of awards including: Best Ensemble at the 2008 Parliamentary Jazz Awards, the EBU/European Jazz Competition (2008); the Peter Whittingham award (2007); Jazzwise Album of the year (2007) and Mojo’s Jazz album of the year (2007).

Consisting of Jay Phelps on trumpet, Nathaniel Facey on alto saxophone, Kit Downes on piano, Tom Farmer on double bass and Shaney Forbes on drums, they have since played at the Newport Jazz Festival, the New York Jazz Festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival and at the Vancouver, Victoria, Toronto and Montreal jazz festivals.

Out ‘n’ In is their follow up produced by saxophonist Jason Yarde and the lineup has changed since 2007.

Shaney Forbes (drums) and Nathaniel Facey (saxophone) are the only remaining personnel from the core quintet. The new musicians are Lewis Wright (vibraphones) and Tom Farmer (bass). Guest musician Julian Siegel also plays on the album (saxophone and clarinet).

Dedicated to American saxophonist and clarinetist Eric Dolphy, a groundbreaking figure in the free jazz movement of the 1960s,

Dolphy was a pioneer often regarded as avant-garde but the sheer exuberance of his playing often singled him out from other free jazz musicians.

He played alongside Charles Mingus, Ornette Coleman, Max Roach and was part of the John Coltrane Quintet before recording his classic Out to Lunch for Blue Note in 1964.

After touring and then deciding to stay in Europe, Dolphy died suddenly from a diabetic coma at the age of 36.

Out ‘n’ In shows Dolphy’s influence with two covers (Hat & Beard and Gazzelloni) alongside six original tracks.

The track listing is as follows:

  1. Out But In (Farmer) [5:18]
  2. Hat & Beard (Dolphy)  [8:15]
  3. A Conversation (Facey, Siegel) [1:49]
  4. So He Left (Facey) [05:32]
  5. A Bitter End for a Tender Giant (Facey) [6:49]
  6. Dolphyus Morphyus (Facey) [10:43]
  7. Interlude (Farmer) [0:43]
  8. Gazzelloni (Dolphy) [5:46]
  9. Syndicalism (Farmer) [6:35]
  10. Another Conversation (Facey, Siegel) [1:17]
  11. Bowden Out (Farmer) [6:03]
