New York, 1988: there I was, obliged to broadcast on other stations while waiting for someone to invent Jazz FM. For a series on the big band era, I tried very hard to interview a man called Andy Kirk. Don’t beat yourself up if the name rings no bells: Kirk’s decidedly one of the forgotten men of jazz. When swing was king, he never got near that throne…but plaudits were heaped on him by white bandleaders like Bob Crosby, Les Brown and Charlie Barnet from the comfort of their homes in the Californian sunshine.
